Scientific Name: Athene cunicularia
This endangered species hails from central and north America and is the only exotic species housed at the Sanctuary. They are the only raptor to nest underground in burrows vacated by small mammals such prairie dogs. They can be often be seen in open grasslands during the day and are one of the few owl species that migrate, going south 2500 to 3500km from their breeding territories in Canada to Texas and Mexico.
The Burrowing Owls at the Sanctuary are named Merlin and Arwyn and although they are supposed to use the vacated burrows of small mammals, we have found that they are perfectly capable of digging their own home and would be half way to China were is not for cement foundations!
