This is one of our smallest eagles and can often be confused with the yellow-billed
kites. Although they are mostly brown, multiple different colour morphs are recorded
within this species; from some individuals being dark brown to others being almost
white. The Wahlberg’s eagle is probably one of the most common of the small true
eagles seen during our summer months. In winter they migrate north into Europe.
This agile eagle hunts mostly on the wing; seldom hunting from a perch. This eagle
is not a fussy eater as it takes on array of prey such as small hares, young
guineafowl, reptiles, insects and even nestlings. Unlike other true eagles whose
chicks are white, the young of this species are covered in a chocolate brown or pale
brown fluff.
